The PVC and composite decks from TimberTech are among the most realistic engineered decking products on the market – available in a wide range of natural colors, grain patterns, and textures.
There are two ways to use this TimberTech decking guide to explore your color options – either by color palette or by collection.
TimberTech decking is designed to replace real wood, so their palettes feature three nature-inspired color families: grays, browns, and tans. You’ll notice that some of the colors are designed to highlight the look of a natural, exposed wood grain, while others replicate the look of painted or stained wood.
TimberTech Advanced PVC Deck in Castle Gate from the Landmark Collection
Gray is one of the most popular colors today – for both home interiors and exteriors. A versatile color family, grays fit naturally into a modern aesthetic but are also at home among coastal or farmhouse designs. Choose a weathered gray like Driftwood or Ashwood to capture the charm of a distressed wood look, or enjoy the sleek aesthetic of a dark hardwood such as Castle Gate or Dark Hickory.
TimberTech Advanced PVC Deck in Mahogany, from the Vintage Collection
Rich woodland tones bring warmth and style that complement all types of home aesthetics — from traditional to rustic to modern. Light browns like Pecan feature cascading colors for an artisanal look, while the dark tones of American Walnut or Mahogany offer sophistication and deep richness of color.
TimberTech Composite Deck in Tigerwood, from the Legacy Collection
Tan deck colors bring a sunny warmth to any outdoor living space and are particularly well-suited to a Scandinavian-inspired aesthetic. Among TimberTech’s tan colors are Weathered Teak — a pleasing golden hue reminiscent of sand — and Whitewash Cedar, the lightest TimberTech color, which is ideal for keeping poolscapes or sun-drenched decks cool in the summer.

Depending on the home’s style and location, one or two of TimberTech’s color families will work better than the others. Just like paint colors, TimberTech’s color chart features both warm and cool shades in each collection. For most decking projects it’s best to use one or the other instead of combining warm and cool shades.
If you choose decking colors according to their undertones, they will blend beautifully with the home’s exterior colors and the surrounding landscape. As you narrow down your color choices there are three things to consider:
TimberTech Advanced PVC Deck in English Walnut, from the Vintage Collection
The colors around the home are a great place to look for inspiration. Plants, trees, gardens, and fences surround a deck with color and may change with the season. Working with shades from the nearby landscape reduces the contrast between the deck and its surroundings for seamless natural views.
TimberTech Advanced PVC Deck in French White Oak, from the Landmark Collection
Deck colors respond to sunshine and heat like any other color. Dark colors will absorb and retain heat, while lighter colors will deflect it, retaining less.
If the deck is exposed to full sun all day, it would be smart to opt for light-colored deck boards. During the summer season, even a deck with partial sun will get very hot. Choose a light deck color like Whitewash Cedar from the TimberTech Composite Legacy Collection for a cooler, more comfortable surface.
Adding a pergola or retractable awning will also keep deck boards cool. If the climate is cool or the deck will be shaded, you can choose a medium or dark shade without worrying too much about heat buildup.
TimberTech Advanced PVC Deck in Weathered Teak, from the Vintage Collection
The exterior color of a home should have a major influence on the decking color. From a design standpoint, a home is a large block of color near the deck, so you want a deck color that complements it.
For seamless flow, choose a decking shade that’s just slightly lighter or darker than the exterior paint color. Or create a dramatic contrast with a deck color that’s significantly darker or lighter. Some homeowners like to match deck rails to the home, using white railings if the home has white trim for example. Others prefer to let the rails blend into the landscape by choosing black or a dark wood tone.
Tip: Test your decking color samples against the floors inside your home too. Make sure the interior floor color and deck color work well together for a seamless transition from indoors to outdoors.
If you know the names of the home’s paint colors, you can do a quick online search to find out their undertones. Even white paint has visible undertones, so it’s worth taking time to order TimberTech decking board samples and testing them against the exterior paint color. If a white has a cream-yellow cast it has warm undertones, and if it has a grayish-blue cast it has cool undertones.
Here are some ideas for how to pair exterior paint colors with decking colors:
TimberTech Advanced PVC Deck in Weathered Teak, Dark Hickory, and Coastline from the Vintage Collection
A standout deck design usually has custom details like lighting, custom railings, and deck boards laid in distinctive patterns. Many custom deck designs combine two or more board colors for a big visual impact.
TimberTech Composite Deck in Ashwood and Espresso, from the Legacy Collection
Contrasting colors serve both aesthetic and practical purposes, creating a border along the edges of the deck or delineating seating and dining areas. This large, modern outdoor space incorporates a two-toned design to draw the eye toward an inviting sitting area – using a base of Ashwood and accents of Espresso from the Legacy Collection.
TimberTech Advanced PVC Deck in Boardwalk and Castle Gate, from the Landmark Collection
Weathered Teak and English Walnut, for example, are an undeniably inviting combination of warm wood looks, while the cool undertones of Boardwalk and Castle Gate from the Landmark Collection create just enough contrast for a visually appealing design.
