Rust-Oleum® Stops Rust® Primer Sprays provide a sound base for the application of Stops Rust® enamels on heavily rusted metal. Use of primers promotes topcoat adhesion and helps prevent chipping, cracking and peeling and eliminates the need for multiple coats of enamel finish. It features a comfort tip with a wider finger pad to reduce fatigue caused by continuous spraying and any-angle tip which allows you to spray at any angle. Not for use on galvanized steel. Rusty Metal Primer is designed for heavily rusted surfaces only. 7780 Clean Metal Primer is designed for lightly rusted, bare metal, or previously painted surfaces.

Surface Preparation: Remove all dirt, grease, oil, salt and chemical contaminants by washing the surface with a commercial detergent, or other suitable cleaning method. Rinse with fresh water and allow to thoroughly dry. Remove loose paint and rust with a wire brush or sandpaper. Previously coated surfaces must be sound and in good condition. Smooth, hard, or glossy finishes should be scarified by sanding to create a surface profile.
Application: Before using, stir thoroughly to ensure any settled pigment is re-dispersed. If necessary, thin the material with acetone. For brush or roller, thinning is not normally required. For air spray, thin up to 15% with acetone. Do not thin with gasoline, lacquer thinner, turpentine, etc. For airless spray, thinning is not normally required. Apply with a good quality brush, roller or spray gun.Brush: Use light, even strokes. Excessive brushing reduces film thickness and protection.
Roller: Usa a 3/8 inch nap roller for rough surfaces. Cover approximately one square yard at a time. Roll away from previously coated area nd work back to it for a uniform appearance. Usa a brush on crevices and sharp edges.
Spray Gun: Follow spray gun direction carefully. Always keep the gun 10-12 inches away from the surface and in motion while spraying.
Recoat: Dry and recoat times are based on 70°F and 50% relative humidity. Allow more time at cooler temperatures. Dries to touch in 2-4 hours, to handle in 5-9 hours and is fully dry in 24 hours. Recoat after 24 hours. Do not apply Clear Enamel over Stops Rust Bright Coat FInish or Aluminum Finish.
Clean-Up: Wipe off tip before storing. Clean-up wet paint with xylene or mineral spirits. Properly discard empty container. Do not burn or place in home trash compactor.
