Kitchen Countertop Design Options

If you are considering replacing your kitchen countertops, you know there are a lot of options. Initially you may make decisions based on appearance alone. However, the materials play a big role in how the countertops will be an effective part of your kitchen. There are many materials to consider such as quartz, butcher block, granite, Corian® and more. Another element of kitchen countertop design is the different edge profiles that you can choose from to customize your home and reflect your style.

Pros and Cons of Different Countertops

Quartz countertops are currently trending. One reason quartz has become so popular is that it is sustainable and durable. These countertops are a combination of 93% quartz and 7% of a manmade compound which makes them non-porous. Non-porous quartz doesn’t stain and is also antibacterial, making it a great option for an active kitchen.

Butcher Block countertops are becoming more popular as a kitchen countertop or an island countertop. They create a very warm look in a kitchen, however, the wood needs to be maintained regularly with oil such as John Boos. Butcher Block can be damaged, but it can be sanded down and refinished, unlike other materials.

Granite countertops historically have been popular and can add a beautiful look to your kitchen as every slab is different. Pieces may have a lot of movement and add a dynamic element to your kitchen. While beautiful, granite is porous and needs to be resealed periodically to ensure it is well maintained. Also, if it is damaged it is not as easily repaired as other countertop options.

Corian® countertops are another popular option as they can mimic the look of a beautiful piece of granite or marble. One of the benefits of Corian® is that it is salvageable. It is non-porous, needs no maintenance and in the event of damage, it can be fixed. Also, since it is a softer material it is less likely to chip a plate or glass.
