AFTER THE STORM – Hurricane Sandy inflicted major damage on the Hogan’s home.

When the Hogan family’s home was destroyed by Superstorm Sandy, Leah Hogan was determined to rebuild. She turned to Ring’s End and Color & Design Consultant Jo Ann Ceasrine to transform the severely damaged house she had into the home she now loves. Together, Jo Ann and Leah assembled a Benjamin Moore color palette reminiscent of sand and surf to reflect the home’s beach theme, to fit the Hogans’ taste, and to create a sanctuary for the family.

With seashells, seagrass, and the colors of the sound as inspiration, we chose FRENCH TOILE CSP-595 for the dining room walls. It is perfect blue with a gently aged appearance that complements the grays and silvers on the table as well as the mellow tones of the antique pine hutch.

Since Hurricane Sandy basically destroyed this home, we worked from detailed plans and elevations. Devising a color plan for new construction can be challenging, as you can’t see how exterior light will be distributed. In this case, though, the client was extremely well organized and had a clear vision of how the rebuilt home should look and function, making for a successful collaboration.

The rebuild was to be a multi-level, open floor plan home. As we wanted to create a cohesive flow of color from room to room, we decided that ‘Water’ would be an organizing color theme. Soft hues of blue, gray, buff, and other neutrals would complement the interior materials as well as the lovely outside environment. By studying the Hogans’ existing furniture and accessories, Jo Ann suggested colors that would be perfect for each room.

On site, the kitchen cabinetry was handpainted with SNOWFALL WHITE OC-118. This beautiful soft white works well with the caesarstone and granite; it contrasts nicely with the darker wood floors. The touch of POWELL BUFF HC-35 on the walls plays off the brass nautical pendants, and it visually connects the kitchen with the living area.

We chose Benjamin Moore paints from various collections, including Color Stories, History, Affinity, and Classic. We played with percentages in the paint formulas to achieve the exact hues we wanted. The client’s painters purchased all the paint from the Ring’s End store in Wilton. This worked well since we were available there to attend to details and questions, making sure the finished project exceeded expectations.

Part of the Benjamin Moore Affinity collection, WISH AF-680 is a warm greige. This nuanced neutral provides a perfect backdrop for lively colors and patterns such as those used in the room’s bedding and accessories.

The Hogans selected Arborcoat stain for the outdoor shingles, using a rich two-stain blend that extended the color plan to the exterior of the home. All in all, the Rowayton rebuild is a beautiful, harmonious, gracious residence. It reflects the client’s taste, the lovely natural setting, and – yes – the optimistic spirit of a community that refused to be defeated by Mother Nature.

A two-color mix of Arborcoat stain giving the appearance of a solid stain proved to be just the right color and look for the exterior of the house.

Now, when Leah Hogan walks through her new home, the hardship of being displaced is a distant memory. “Working with Ring’s End made all the difference. Thanks to their expertise and guidance, the Benjamin Moore colors blend seamlessly with the new layout of our home and express our lifestyle perfectly.”
